Overview
A cough is the body’s way of clearing the airways. When it lasts for several weeks, it is worth having it assessed, because many different conditions can be responsible.

Assessment
- A careful history of how the cough started and what changes it
- Examination of the chest and throat
- A chest X-ray and breathing tests where appropriate
- Further tests guided by what is found
Treatment Options
- Treatment depends on the cause, which is why assessment comes first
- Avoiding known triggers such as smoke
- Medicines advised by your doctor for the underlying condition
When to Seek Care
- A cough lasting more than three weeks
- Coughing up blood
- A cough with weight loss, fever or night sweats
